The Canon SD1400IS is capable and compact For SDesign In short, this is a great camera in a very small package that works well! I wanted a small portable camera with video capabilities of high definition could take with me when I did not want to carry my digital SLR (Canon 40D + lenses) and this little gem fits perfectly.
This camera replaced a Canon PowerShot SD780IS (Black) who returned due to the constant noise of audio (ringing) while recording video. Rather than risk another bad SD780IS with the same subject (many seem to have heard the noise / hum), I decided to upgrade to the latest SD1400IS Canon PowerShot (Black). I am pleased that this camera has no disagreement with the video audio recording.
The image quality of the SD780IS and SD1400IS is approximately the same height and with what one would expect of a small ultra-portable camera. Turning to 14MP 12MP is a wash on the sensor the same size and the results are very similar. I posted several photos of flowers in the "customer images" Canon PowerShot SD1400IS 14.1 MP (Black) and also by several 100% crop each image pixel onlookers can see the detail that this camera produces.
Let me be clear, anyone who thinks that this camera will produce anything close to the quality of a DSLR is fooling himself. There is no way this small package (3.6 x 0.7 x 2.2 inches, 4.6 oz) can produce the same image quality of a DSLR. If the picture quality, amount, you might be better considering the Canon PowerShot S90 10MP Digital Camera, but lose the ability to high-definition video, some portability and spend more money. When I want extreme quality, just take my Canon 40D + lenses with me and shoot in RAW.
Auto mode is intelligent and I think there is something more going on behind the scenes than you might expect. If you take the same image (same ISO settings, lighting, shutter etc) to Auto and then the program mode, the results are similar, but I think the Auto mode almost always wins. I have no way of confirming this, but the automatic mode seems to have different compression algorithms depending on the subject and may produce a less noise at high ISO mode programming can be. Inside shots are good, but I would like to establish an ISO range to force the automatic mode that does not exceed 400 ISO.
Tip: If you are getting blurry images, remember that the minimum focal length is much smaller than 5 cm at least 28 mm and 50 cm more significantly when zooming to 112 mm. Therefore, if you are trying to get the camera close to your subject, be sure to measure your zoom / subject distances correctly otherwise the subject will be out of focus. Perhaps this would have helped the 1-star reviewer.
End products of note: 1. No viewfinder and in all honesty, the SD780IS small viewfinder was useless, so do not miss having one. The LCD is bright and works very well even on sunny days. 2. No optical zoom during video recording, digital zoom only, so you have to decide on a length of zoom before beginning recording. This is not a problem for me as many people zoom overuse and generally have been better to simply record a fixed plane instead of making me dizzy with trembling zoom cam + simultaneously.
In short: This is a great pocket camera with decent image capable of HD video recording as a bonus. It's small enough that it will reach everywhere that allows capturing those special moments. I would recommend this to anyone, as long as they realize the limitations of ultra compact cameras. I hope this review is helpful.
Updated: I forgot to mention that one should be sure to get nothing less than a "Class 4" SD card (class 6 would be even better) to avoid any problems recording video (missing images, etc)
Update 2: Still Loving this camera after six weeks of use, I particularly like the video capabilities of high definition and use all the time. The. Mov video for easy import into Apple iMovie to edit and produce great results. At a recent event, I had the opportunity to take some very nice photos in low light without flash in automatic mode. I was really surprised at the quality achieved in such harsh shooting conditions. The best results had not zoom too much because there is less light available (f-stop changes when it is about). If you are noticing blur, try to zoom less and be closer to your subject.
Update 3: I just ran through the recent announcement of the Canon PowerShot SD4000IS (Black) 10 MP, which was just released and the list price is now over but the new SD1400IS 10MP CMOS sensor backlit looks very promising for reducing noise that is common in the sub-compact cameras. The SD4000IS is also capable of high definition video by incorporating stereo and you can zoom while recording video along with a new "Super Slow Motion" video and a faster f/2.0 lens. It will be interesting to see what users think of this new camera in the coming months. I hope that this update is helpful.
